Javier E. Garay is a professor in the Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, where he joined the faculty in 2015. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and a master’s degree and doctorate in materials science and engineering from the University of California, Davis. He previously served as a professor and chair of the materials science and engineering program at the University of California, Riverside.
He is the principal investigator of the Advanced Material Processing and Synthesis Lab and the founding director of the UC San Diego Fusion Engineering Institute. His research focuses on advanced materials processing and synthesis, with an emphasis on designing micro- and nanostructured materials for optimized optical, magnetic, thermal, and energy storage performance.
Garay has received several federal honors, including Army and Air Force Young Investigator Program awards and the National Science Foundation CAREER Award.
