Hailiang Liu is a professor of mathematics at Iowa State University and is currently on leave serving as a program director in the Applied Mathematics Program at the National Science Foundation. At Iowa State, he also holds a joint appointment in computer science and serves as the department’s data science and AI coordinator. His research spans computational and applied mathematics, including mathematical modeling using partial differential equations, applied analysis, numerical methods, and scientific computing. His current work explores the intersection of mathematical foundations and emerging technologies such as deep learning, as well as data-driven approaches for PDE-based problems. Liu earned his PhD in applied mathematics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and holds an M.S. in applied mathematics from Tsinghua University and a B.S. in mathematics from Henan Normal University.
