Christopher Merrett

About Christopher Merrett

Christopher Merrett earned his doctorate from the University of Iowa in Geography. He is the Dean for Innovation and Economic Development and the Director of the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University.


Merrett collaborated on several publications, including "Rural Areas in Transition: Meeting Challenges and Making Opportunities". He has secured millions in external funding from various sources including the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the National Science Foundation (NSF).


Merrett serves on the Illinois Governor’s Rural Affairs Council and the Lt. Governor’s Ag Equity and Food Insecurity advisory board. Merrett also worked on the 2019 transition team for Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.
