Nigel Newbutt is B.O. Smith Research Professor, and director of the Equitable Learning Technology Lab at the University of Florida. He earned a doctorate from University College Dublin studying assistive technology, autism, virtual worlds, psychology, ICT, visual processing, and CMC theories, and a master’s from University of Greenwich. Newbutt’s work revolves around technologies for autistic and neurodivergent populations and has developed some of the first work to practically examine the use, adoption, and preferences for virtual reality head-mounted displays (HMDs) with these groups. He is currently interested in examining and developing the role that VR HMDs can play in supporting young autistic people in their daily lives, informed through their input.
