Reshma Shetty co-founded Ginkgo Bioworks in 2008. As president, chief operations officer and board member, she has seen the company grow to more than 500 employees. Shetty has been active in synthetic biology for more than 15 years. In 2006, she was an advisor to the iGEM competition, where she was best known for engineering bacteria to smell like bananas and mint.
Forbes named her one of 2008’s Eight People Inventing the Future, and Fast Company named her one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2011. In 2018, Business Insider named her one of the most powerful female engineers.
Shetty earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Utah and a doctorate in biological engineering from MIT.
