Dr. Matuana is a Professor of Sustainable Polymer Processing and Manufacturing and Associate Director in the School of Packaging at Michigan State University. His research focuses on improving the performance and functionality of packaging materials, with emphasis on addressing current challenges such as development of bio-based materials and processing aids additives from natural resources; flexible and rigid packaging sustainability and circularity; mono-material packaging design to enable recyclability (as alternative to multi-layer plastics); biofoams; new approaches to enhance package barrier properties and extend food self life (trough cellulose nanotechnology). He earned his Ph.D. degree from the University of Toronto in Ontario and both his baccalaurate’s and master’s degrees from Laval University in Quebec City, all in Canada. Professor Matuana is a Fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) and the International Academy of Wood Science (IAWS).
